Extracting visual symbols from your ideas is a powerful way to reinforce a concept.
In the below image, Hellen Keller's quote is describing her interpretation of the mechanics of happiness.
What symbol do we all associate with happiness?
A smiling face.
We can add another layer of meaning to the image by using the arced arrow to represent the journey Keller is describing.
The statement has been intentionally separated into two logical parts (the eyes of the metaphorical face), describing the position of the subject before and after taking this advice (connected by the smile).
In this example, we're using simple geometry to infer communication between two parties (the user interface from your favorite messaging app.)
The contrasting emphasis of elements maps back to the sequence in the statement, on the left hand side, we're examining what is said, on the right, we're examining who speaks.
Here we're leveraging a common symbol for eyesight to depict two different situations. On the left, a lack of vision -- leaving the subject in the dark, on the right -- brilliant clarity.
