Negative Space

Space is not there to fill.

It's there to frame.

We tend to cram as much information onto a canvas as possible.

Negative space is the area around and between a subject. It is much like a pause in a conversation. Our instinct is to keep talking. Instead, we could take a moment to collect our thoughts, listen, and let the silence come.

Your audience appreciates brevity, both verbally and visually.

Work hard to give it to them.

It takes practice, but this is where I am on the negative space spectrum. I've allowed it to become a guiding principle of my work and brand. It takes time, but challenge yourself to remove everything you can that isn't absolutely necessary.
