Restraint

Make one decision to save 1,000 decisions.

When I started Visualize Value, I made a couple of decisions that eliminated the stylistic deliberation that stops so many people from gathering momentum. By creating self-imposed restraint up front, it took away the distraction of constant decision making and allowed me to actually start. 

My decisions were:



"I'm going to stick to black and white, vector images."

"I'm going to stick to concepts that resonate with me personally."

I'm a firm believer in the idea that "good advertising wears in, not out."



We have a tendency to abandon our ideas before anyone else has the chance to convince us to keep going.

One of the biggest lessons this project has taught me is that restraint is a really powerful tool in making you more creative.

If you can't hide behind constantly tweaking color, typography, and images, you're simply forced to just come up with better ideas using the constraints you've imposed upon yourself.

Build a visual system that constrains you, and your ideas will get better with every iteration.

As with any pursuit, the fewer tools you try to master at once, the better.
